Li'l Eagle |
These permanent residents need sponsorships to help with feed and upkeep. Batman and Eagle are friendly Indian reservation broomtails. Eagle was captured from the wild as a foal without his mother. He did not receive proper nutrition and developed severe calf hocks. There are many benefits to sponsorship for you and the sponsored horse. We're still working on the sponsorship page, so to find out more, please e-mail us. |

Proud flesh in serious need of treatment |
||||
![]() |
Ziggy was brought to the rescue this summer with a bad case of proud flesh on both his hind pastern/coronet and his front leg. Proud flesh is healing (granulation) tissue that has overfilled the space of a wound and kept on growing. It causes serious blemishes and it can but doesn't always interfere with a horse's performance. It occurs in wounds that are dirty, neglected, too wide to suture, or are in areas that are in a lot of tension and motion. Thus it's most often seen in the lower limbs. Inflammation and poor blood supply interfere with epithelialization (skin growth), leaving the way open for the proud flesh to s proliferate--rubbery, bloody-looking, smooth and slippery yuck. |

| This isn't a great picture of me, but you'd be scowling too if you had to wear a pink halter and your name was Ziggy Stardust. (Hmm, on second thought maybe you wouldn't. Unless you were mad because you wanted rhinestones.) I'm not. Clearly this is because Stormy is after my hay. So let's get this photo op over with, shall we? |
The
recommended treatment for it is surgical removal followed by rigorous
attention to keeping it clean and covered. In Ziggy's case, because of its location on
the coronet area, the hoof wall has been permanently blemished, according to

I'm called Diamond Luck. That's me last spring, shortly after I came to Fresh Start. I'm a fantastic, flashy sorrel mare, if I do say so myself. I'm also having a baby in the spring! I can be ridden, but sometimes I buck. I need someone who can patiently cure me of this. |

They call me Cloudy. I'm an appy-paint. I was
auctioned off, destined for slaughter for sure, because I was lame. |
I'm Silly Wizard (above), an American Mustang saved from slaughter last year.
I was starved, worm-infested and very sick with strangles. I love
treats. I want to be friends although I'm still wary of people.
I'm sleek and trim and LOVE TO RUN. When you win me over it will
definitely be on my terms.
